LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) - Despite better-than-expected holiday sales, J.C. Penney plans to close 40 stores by early April, and one of the stores to be closed is in LaGrange, Ga.

In statement released J.C. Penney, company representatives say that "the closing of the store is not a reflection on the mall or community but a natural cycle of retail."
Some shoppers we spoke to say they are sad to see the store close.
"I've been shopping at J.C. Penny literally for… since I was a child," said shopper Donald Lovelace. "And I come here at least maybe three or four times a week you know just to see if they have any new items. Um, and knowing that they're closing now- I mean, now I have to drive to Newnan or Columbus just to you know go to the next J.C. Penny."
Nationwide, more than 2,000 people will lose their jobs. The retailer, which has been in business for more than a century, has been struggling to get itself out of a deep slump for years.
