Columbus native killed by stray police bullet in Iowa

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Authorities in Iowa are investigating the death of a woman originally from Columbus.

Autumn Steele, 34, was killed earlier this week when a police officer slipped on the snow and discharged his weapon in Burlington, Iowa. The stray bullet, intended to fend off Steele's dog, struck her and killed her in front of her husband and young son.

Steele's family told News Leader 9 there is no new information on the case and that they are waiting for her body to be released.

According to the family, Steele's body will eventually be transported to Clanton, AL. She will be buried there with her grandfather.

The family is also asking for help in transporting Steele's body back to Columbus for burial. If you want to help the family, you can go to their memorial fundraiser page by clicking here.
