COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – With so much emphasis on high school and college football in our area, it's important to pause and recognize another kind of school sport – the academic decathlon.

Our congratulations to the team at Shaw High School in Columbus for besting their Muscogee County rivals to move on to the state championship.

The diverse and talented team from Shaw High won an impressive 32 individual medals in a wide variety of subjects, ranging from literature to economics, and from science to speech.

The Shaw decathletes are: Anderson Peguero, Amy Lee, Aliyah Davis, Grant Geeslin, Kameron Leatherwood, Alltonese Gray, Pearl Brown, Robbie Allen, and Charles Boggs. The team is coached by Natasha Torres.

What makes these students amazing as a team is that they are a mix of students with strengths in writing, speaking, math and science, a well-rounded group that understands success and the rewards it brings come from hard work.

These are young people with bright futures.

The fact that the Shaw team won the academic decathlon two years in a row makes their achievement twice as sweet! Congratulations!
