COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Community organizations gathered to help the less fortunate Saturday, Jan. 17 at the 13th annual Totes to Totes suitcase drive.
Columbus' New Apostolic Church partnered with Totes to Tots, Georgia Cancer Specialists and Northside Hospital to collect backpacks and kid-sized suitcases for foster children in Georgia.
Totes to Tots says it has distributed more than 37,000 bags to foster children.
"Today is our actual first event for Totes to Tots here in Columbus," explained Darrell Dobey, chairman of Totes to Tots. "The event is purposefully set for foster children of Georgia through our Department of Family and Children Services that we can be able to provide bags…book bags, backpacks, duffle bags for those children who are less fortunate."
More than 8,000 children from infants to teenagers are currently in the foster care system in Georgia.
