COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - One of the original Freedom Riders from the civil rights movement era visited LaGrange College on Thursday.
In 1961, Hank Thomas was 19 years old and a student at Howard University in Washington, D.C. when he joined the Freedom Ride from Washington to the Deep South.
The Freedom Rides were organized by the Congress of Racial Equality to test federal laws outlawing segregation on interstate buses, waiting rooms, lunch counters and restroom facilities.
The event is part of the LaGrange College Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration.
