(WTVM) – Many people do not need a designated day to eat pizza, but today is National Pizza Pie Day.

Pizza was originally invented in Naples, Italy. It was considered a peasant's meal for centuries.

The first pizzeria to open in North America was Lombardi's Pizza, which opened in 1905 on Spring Street in New York City. Pizza Hut did not open its doors until 1958 with its first chain, which was located in Wichita, KS.

Over 5 billion pizzas are sold all over the world each year, and Americans eat approximately 350 slices of pizza per second.

No matter what kind of pizza you get: pepperoni, hamburger and mushroom, or even a supreme - make sure you go out and celebrate today.

So, what kind of pizza is your favorite? Take our poll to vote for your favorite!
