COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - New crime statistics released by the City of Columbus on Monday show an increase in certain types of crimes.
The office of Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson released a statement showing crimes listed as "Part 1" rose 7 percent in total in 2014. These crimes include burglary, rape, and robbery.
Rape showed a 31 percent increase, robbery showed a 6 percent increase and burglary showed an 11 percent increase compared to 2013 rates.
In comparison, officials say 2014 had the fourth lowest crime rate since 2005, when the population was 20,000 less. The lowest rate in the last ten years occurred in 2012, the second lowest rate in 2011 and the third lowest rate in 2013.
