OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

On Feb. 23 at approximately 7:48 p.m., members of the Opelika Police Department and the Opelika Fire Department responded to the 2400 block of Lafayette Parkway in reference to a motor vehicle crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a black female was struck by a 1997 Ford Explorer. The Explorer was traveling north on Lafayette Parkway, and the female was walking north on Lafayette Parkway.

"It appears the pedestrian was walking in the roadway or on the edge of the roadway, and was struck by the vehicle, traveling north. The driver of the vehicle stopped, thought he had hit an animal, got out and determined it was a person and called 911 immediately," Capt. Shane Healey stated, Opelika Police Department.

Investigators encourage pedestrians and joggers to stay away from major roadways like Hwy 431.

Also, wear light colored or reflective clothing, do not listen to music through ear-buds and watch out for big trucks with wide mirrors.

"Make sure you are walking against traffic, so you can see what is coming towards you do not be on the side of the road traffic is flowing, go against traffic and watch so you can get out of the roadway if you need to be safe," Capt. Healey said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Opelika Police Department, but at this point it does not appear the unidentified driver of the Ford Explorer will face any charges.
