Shaw High's academic decathlon team wins 2nd at state competition

    Shaw High School's Academic Decathlon team has scored another big win. For the second year in a row, the team won first place overall in the Muscogee County School District on Saturday, Jan. 10. 

    The students won 32 individual medals, three individual trophies and two individual scholarships.

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - For the second year in a row, the Shaw High School academic decathlon team placed as a top finisher in the state completion.

The team won second place in Division II of the state competition; overall in the state competition of 21 district winning schools the Shaw team placed sixth.

The students also won six individual medals in the following categories: Amy Lee- third art; Grant Geeslin - first, social science and third economics; Kameron Leatherwood - second, math; Charles Boggs - second math and third Science.

Academic Decathlon is a competition among high school students. The team must consist of "A" (Honors), "B" (Scholastic), and "C" (Varsity) level students.

Competition events include seven tests of academic strength in the areas of economics, mathematics, language and literature, science, music, art, and social science; the three communication competitions include a prepared and impromptu speech, an interview, and a written essay. The competition concludes with a Super Quiz Oral Relay.

The team consisted of: Charles Boggs, Alltonese Gray, Anderson Peguero II, Aliyah Davis, Kameron Leatherwood, Grant Geeslin, Robbie Allen, Pearl Brown, Amy Lee and Coach Natasha Torres.
