Aubrey Weldon found guilty of reckless murder

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - The verdict is in for a Cusetta man charged with reckless murder in a fatal DUI related accident that killed a Beaulah High School student.

A Lee County jury found Aubrey Weldon guilty of reckless murder in the death of Andrew Pugh.

The jury believed state witnesses who testified that in August 2013, Weldon was under the influence of prescription drugs and alcohol when he left a Dollar General store after trying to buy more beer, where his card was declined.

He was driving about 90 miles per hour on Lee Road 270, when he blew by a stop sign, crossed the center line and hit Andrew's vehicle head-on.

Andrews's mother, Jane Mungle, had this to say about the guilty verdict.

"Andy's life was vindicated," Mungle said. "I miss him more than my life as a mother I would give my life for all four of my boys."

Pugh's family says although the verdict does bring them some peace, their hearts will never heal from these senseless loss of a young man whose life was cut tragically short.

Weldon will be sentenced on June 2. He faces 10 years to life in prison for the reckless murder conviction.
