LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) – In the cafeteria of LaGrange High School, 12 fourth grade students participated in the 2nd Annual Future Chefs Competition.
The event was hosted by Troup County School System's nutrition partner, Sodexo, in conjunction with the TCSS Food and Nutrition Department.
In a competition reminiscent of Masterchef, Jr., students stood behind round tables explaining their snacks to five judges as they tasted each individual item. Each contestant had 90 minutes to prepare their snacks and then five minutes to explain their dish to the panel of judges.
The culinary competition encourages students to learn about good nutrition by creating healthy snacks. The food selections were judged on: health consciousness, simplicity, kid friendliness, preparation, demonstration, taste and fun.
In the end, Ayva Smiley from Callaway Elementary wowed the judges with her Apple Snack Pie recipe and she was declared the winner. She will go on to compete in the regional competition.
Milly Criswell from Franklin Forest Elementary was named the second place winner, and Evelyn Eastridge, from West Point Elementary was named the third place winner.
