2 teens killed in Russell Co. car crash Tuesday

RUSSELL COUNTY, GA (WTVM) - A single-truck crash at 3:07 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, claimed two young lives and the driver injured. 

Deontae Jamal Gillis, 17, was injured when the 2000 Dodge Ram he was driving left the road and struck a tree before catching fire. 

Gillis was transported to Columbus Medical Center with injuries. Two passengers in the Dodge were killed; Janika Rogers, 17, and Asija Johnson, 16, both of Fort Mitchell, were pronounced dead on the scene. 

Neither Rogers or Johnson were wearing a seat belt. The crash occurred on Russell County Road 18, approximately 15 miles south of Phenix City.

Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.
