COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A crowd packed into the Eufaula School District Central office on Tuesday after two veteran coaches stepped down.
The Eufaula School Board heard from several concerned parents and residents in support of the two popular coaches, who have led local teams for 10 years each.
Last month, Eufaula High School athletics director and head football coach Dan Klages retired, and one day later, Eufaula High's head basketball coach Mike Henry resigned, but he will stay on as a teacher.
Their departures have sparked some suspicion and passion from people in the community.
"I met with the coaches in a professional manner face-to-face and said I appreciate your service to our school system and that we were going to go in another direction," says Eufaula Schools Superintendent Eddie Tyler.
"He told them he was going in a new direction and no one would tell us what the new direction is and as the booster club president and as athletic club I think we need to know," says booster club president Nicole John.
Members of the crowd say they represent a "no confidence" vote in Eufaula's superintendent. They defended Klages, saying he had the ninth-best team in the state - two of the last four seasons - while they argue Henry had a winning record.
