ATLANTA (WTVM) - The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the unemployment rate is the lowest it has been in seven years and job growth has hit a historic high.

According to numbers released by the GADOL on Thursday, The unemployment rate dropped in February to 6.3 percent, down from 6.4 percent in January. The February unemployment rate is down a whole percent from one year ago.

The state added 157,000 jobs in the past year, this has been the most growth the state has seen since the height of the summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996.

The job fields with the highest job growth are: transportation and warehousing, medical, professional-business services.

The number of claims for unemployment insurance declined by nearly 49 percent.
