LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - An east Alabama man is behind bars tonight, March 23, charged with murdering his long time friend over the weekend.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones says detectives believe the two friends got into an argument over a piece of property.
Early on March 22, around 4 a.m., Lee County Sheriff's Investigators were called to the Cusseta home of 38-year-old Robert Orr. In just a few hours, Orr would be charged with murder for shooting 24-year-old Joshua Peek ,of Opelika, AL, in the face.
"We are not sure the specific details of what initiated the argument or the confrontation, but based on our investigation at this point it may have had something to do with a piece of property. If our information pans out, the value of the piece of property was very insignificant," says Sheriff Jones.
Investigators recovered the 38 Derringer handgun believed to have been used in the shooting inside Orr's home. Orr was still at his home when investigators arrived. Two witnesses who saw the two men fighting and heard the shooting were also on the scene.
"There have been several shootings and some of the shootings have resulted in fatalities in the east Alabama area. Unfortunately, it appears that, in many cases, it is over an insignificant issue. It's just one person being angry, in many cases, at the other or for some perceived wrong that they choose to settle with a firearm," says Jones.
Orr remains behind bars at the Lee County Detention Facility and has not been able to make his $150,000 bond.
Investigators are still trying to determine if drugs or alcohol may have played a factor in the fatal argument.
