VALLEY, AL (WTVM) - Investigators in Valley, AL have made more arrests in connection to the 2013 murder of Courtland Larae Harper.
Harper was killed as he stepped outside of his residence on Glass Road in Valley in the evening hours on Nov. 10, 2013. He was shot one time in the head at close range. The case remained unsolved until several informants came forward.
Police Chief Tommy Weldon says two additional arrests have now been made in the case. Corey Davis, 19, and Derrick Newell, 21, were charged with Harper's murder.
You may recall, Deonta Summers, 21, Demetrious Newell, 22, and David Bell, 19, were previously arrested in connection to the case and were indicted by a grand jury on Feb. 13. Charges were dropped against 22-year-old Demetrious Newell when investigators learned it was his brother Derrick, who was allegedly involved, not Demetrious.
"Our investigation has revealed David Bell is the person that actually pulled the trigger," Chief Tommy Weldon said, Valley Police Chief.
Valley Police believe the motive behind the murder was robbery. Investigators say the night of the shooting, Summers identified Copeland as a possible target because he had just won some money at a casino.
Police say Newell provided the riffle used in the shooting and the vehicle. Davis drove the vehicle to Copeland's home and investigators believed Bell shot him in the head.
Now, Davis, Newell, Summers and Bell are behind bars and are not bale to make bond. There is a possibility their charges could be upgraded to capital murder since robbery was a motive and may have been committed during murder.
