OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) – The Opelika Police Department received a complaint concerning a phone scam on Wed. April 1.

Someone complained about receiving a phone call that claimed to be an investigator with Opelika Municipal Court. The caller demanded money be paid using a credit card for old fines, and if not paid the individual would have an outstanding warrant for their arrest.

The incoming call was listed on the caller ID as Opelika Municipal Court (334-705-5190). In the phone call the complainant was advised to call 866-221-6922 in order to pay the fine.

However, no fines owed to Opelika Municipal Court will be requested to be paid over the phone. Also, no investigators work for Opelika Municipal Court.

Many scam artists use devices to show a false telephone number on caller ID. If any call is received like this the Opelika Police Department advises not to give out your information or make a payment over the phone.

Please contact your local law enforcement agency if you are contacted about a similar scam.
