PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - The youth group of First Baptist Church in Phenix City met Wednesday afternoon for their ninth annual Cross Walk.
It's a yearly event where members take turns carrying a cross through the city for about five to six miles.
Organizers say the event is a way for the youth group to reflect on the events leading up to Easter weekend and what it meant for Jesus to carry the cross.
Pastor Ed Sunday-Winters says he's also proud of the youth group's maturity and says it gives them the opportunity to talk about the sacrifices they make as followers of Christ.
"It's not always easy, and it's not going to be an easy walk. It's long, and they'll take turns – nobody will carry the cross too long, but everybody who wants to will get a chance to carry the cross," he said.
The group stopped midway for a short devotional. The trek took them up 4th Avenue to Idle Hour Park and back to the church.
