COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Drivers in Columbus will face a detour on one of the main roads in town.
City officials say that Forrest Road between Elm Drive and Avalon Road will be closed for the next six months due to the construction of a new bridge over Cooper Creek.
Drivers will be detoured two miles around the construction through Macon Road.
Traffic Engineer Walter Dorsey says the detour will add about 10 minutes to your travel time.
"Just in general due to the construction and congestion we ask folks if you don't have to drive to avoid the area. Because of the delays you will be expecting and also you will be contributing to the delays for everybody else," Walter Dorsey said.
Dorsey says that once construction is completed not only will the area have a new bridge, but the road will be widened along with the new sidewalks.
