Opelika Fire Chief announces retirement

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM/WXTX) – Opelika Fire Chief Terry Adkins announces his retirement after 49 years of service to the Opelika community. Adkins will retire on May 31st.

Chief Adkins began his firefighting career in June 1966, and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1977. Adkins became Fire Chief in June 1996.

Mayor Gary Fuller says, “Chief Terry Adkins certainly has a servant's heart and has been an exceptional firefighter for nearly 49 years of service to the community. He has no doubt, been responsible for the safety and well-being of many folks over the years in some of this area's biggest times of disaster.”

Assistant Fire Chief Byron Prather will be appointed as Interim Fire Chief after Chief Adkins retires. The city has already began its search for a new Fire Chief.
