COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM/WXTX) – A new study shows that Albany and Columbus are on the top 10 list of the most dangerous cities in the state of Georgia.

Albany was ranked the third most dangerous city in the state, and Columbus came in at number nine on the list. Also in our area, Lagrange was the 17th most dangerous city. Atlanta was the most dangerous city in the state.

Alabama was the 14th most dangerous state with 431 violent crimes per 1000,000 people. Opelika, Phenix City, and Auburn came in as the 6, 7, and 15th most dangerous cities in Alabama respectively.

Alaska, New Mexico and Nevada were the most violent states. Georgia was the 21st most dangerous state with 366 violent crimes per 100,000 people.

To compile the list, Law Street Media used the FBI's four major violent crime categories: murders, aggravated assaults, robberies, and forcible rapes. This created a standard measure of violent crimes per 100,000 people with cities with a population larger than 100,000.
