"Redeemed" puts spin on story of prodigal son

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - You may know the Bible story of the prodigal son, but some local playwrights are putting a new twist on it.

It was opening night for "Redeemed" - a new, original play on stage now at the Family Theatre off Hamilton Road.

The two Columbus women who co-wrote it, Leslie Cardwell and Jessica Stephens, say it's a sequel to another drama they developed last year, a modern telling of the prodigal son returning home.

This is the twelfth play they've written together.

"We decided to start writing plays because we wanted shows challenging for younger and older actors, but also accessible roles to them, shows we could do really well at this theater," Stephens said.

They call it a story of hope, grace and forgiveness with some bad characters returning for a second chance.

"Redeemed" shows will be every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights through April 25 at Family Theater, in the back of Rose Hill Baptist Church.
