Muscogee Co. School Board discusses possible changes to Spring Break at work session

MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GA (WTVM) - Several hot-button issues were discussed at Monday night's Muscogee County School Board Work Session, including when teachers and students come back after the summer.

They also discussed proposed changes to the school calendar, which would have teachers returning on either July 27 or August 3, with the students starting a couple days later.

The proposal also has a shortened Fall Break, but Spring Break would basically remain the same.

"The idea of transition the Spring Break March was difficult last year and difficult a lot of patents want to keep it," explained Rebecca Braaten, Muscogee Co. Assistant Superintendent of Education. "They want it warmer, they want it in April. Right now April is not the best thing."

The Muscogee County School District will send out a survey Tuesday to the schools with two options for the school calendar, with the main difference being which week in March Spring Break begins.

The school board will vote on it next week.

The principal of Martin Luther King Junior Elementary also spoke to the board about wanting to have uniforms for his school. Most faculty and parents agree with him.

The board will also vote on the matter next Monday.
