LANETT, AL (WTVM) – CVS/pharmacy awarded the Lanett Police Department a grant in order to install a Drug Collection Unit.
This unit will provide residents with a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medication which includes controlled substances. It will also help Lanett prevent the contamination of local landfills and water supplies from unused medication.
The Drug Collection Unit is intended to reduce the amount of unneeded medicine in residents' homes and decrease prescription drug abuse, which has increased in the recent years especially in teenagers. According to a 2014 Partnership for Drug-Free Kids study, more than 70 percent of teenagers say it is easy to get prescription drugs from their parents' medicine cabinets.
"Safely disposing of unused medication is critical to protecting our children and our environment," Chief Angie Spates stated.
Lanett's Drug Collection Unit is open to the public 24/7 and is located at 401 North Lanier Avenue inside the Police Department.
