COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Muscogee County School Board unanimously passed a revised calendar for the 2015-2016 school year at Monday's meeting.
The revisions come after concerns from parents and requests from teachers.
"What we wanted to accomplish was to give our teachers and our parents the best possible schedule that is later," explains Muscogee County Superintendent Dr. Davis Lewis.
Teachers will now report for their first day on Monday, August 3 and have five days of pre-planning instead of three.
The first day for students will be Monday, August 10, rather than the first week of August.
There will not be a fall break in the schedule, but school will be out again the entire week of Thanksgiving.
Lewis requested a waiver from the state allowing flexibility for online testing, which will now allow Spring Break to be the week of March 21, 2016.
"To accommodate this we did have to adjust the calendar. The first semester will be 88 days rather than the typical 90. The second semester will be 92 which has no bearing on the award of credits," says Lewis.
The number of post-planning days has been reduced from five to two, eliminating professional development during those days.
In other news, a group at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary will be formed to complete the final design for school uniforms.
Additionally, a contract was awarded to Sports Turf Company for nearly $670,000 for the Synthetic Turf Project at Kinnett Stadium.
