Warden: escaped inmate caught

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus police say they have captured an escaped inmate that got away from custody this afternoon, thanks to tips from the public.

Officials say inmate Monquez Jackson escaped from sanitation detail at Granite Bluff Landfill off River Road around four this afternoon and was captured just after 7 o'clock. Authorities say a resident pointed Jackson out to police and he was taken into custody without incident

"It was a spontaneous event," said Dwight Hamrick, Warden of Muscogee County Prison. "We are still investigating to determine why he chose to escape this afternoon."

Jackson has felony charges pending.

The Warden Hamrick says there are 385 inmates in the work release program.
