Auburn votes to build new high school

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - The unofficial vote count is in, and the city of Auburn has voted overwhelmingly to allow the city to build a new high school.

The final tally for Tuesday night's vote was 2,427 for the tax and 428 against it.

Construction for the new Auburn High School will cost $72 million, but it won't cost residents any more than they're already paying.

City and school leaders wanted to use an existing five mill tax to pay for the new Auburn High School and renovate existing schools, but they needed permission from voters to use the money.

Auburn's superintendent says if the schools keep growing at the current rate, a second new high school may need to be built in 2020.
