COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Thousands of Muscogee County residents teamed up to fight against one of the worst diseases in the world.
The American Cancer Society kicked off its annual Relay for Life event Friday night in Muscogee County to raise money for groundbreaking cancer research, education and prevention programs, and critical services for people facing cancer.
For many people at the event, whose lives were affected by cancer, it was a very emotional night.
"My mother passed away from a varying cancer and 8 years ago and so is a very emotional and personal journey for me to participate Relay for Life," said Amy Clines. "That is why we are here – bring awareness and raise money to help others and fight to fight and win."
Four million people participated in more than 6,000 events worldwide last year, and the Relay For Life of Muscogee County was the 19th largest event in the world in 2014.
