Veterans to meet at Ft. Benning 50 years later

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - A Vietnam veteran from the 173rd Airborne Brigade returned to Fort Benning after 50 years.

We met up with Robert Toporek on Monday at the Vietnam Memorial Plaza at the National Infantry Museum.

He is on a mission to reunite his squad members from Company B-2/503 for their 50th anniversary. It was the first U.S. Army ground combat unit committed to the war.

Toporek is also looking to have this year declared as the year of the Vietnam veteran.

We asked about his emotions upon returning to Fort Benning after five decades.

"When I came here, my first airplane ride I jumped out of it," Toporek said. "It's a fond memory of learning how to jump out of an airplane, but it's a little eerier we did that."

The reunion will take place Tuesday at the Hampton Hotel in Fort Benning. The 1st Air Cavalry are also having their 50th Anniversary.
