COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Academic athletes signed on the dotted line at the 5th Annual National Signing Day for Scholars.
The event took place at Northside High School on Monday night.
Dr. Frank Brown of Columbus State University came up with the idea of an academic signing day for students in Muscogee County five years ago.
Approximately $12.9 million worth of scholarship money has been given collectively to 150 students who have excelled academically.
"We want our doctors, our lawyers," said Keith Seifert, Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction. "Our folks are going on to college and university across the nation to be recognized for their academic performance and this is the way to do that."
WTVM's very own Chuck Leonard was the master of ceremonies of the event, and Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson was the keynote speaker.
