COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The 7th annual Bicycle Week event in Columbus begins Monday, May 11.
There will be a series of events taking place in coordination with the Gehl Studio's visit as part of the Knight Cities Challenge as part of bicycle week. In addition, on Tuesday May 12, we will be launching the Columbus Bicycle App to the public. This will be a free bicycle app for everyone to use for recording their trips, reporting road problems, and other issues.
Ride On Bikes through the month of May!
May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling - and encourage more folks to giving biking a try.
Whether you bike to work or school; ride to save money or time; pump those pedals to preserve your health or the environment; or simply to explore your community, National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride.
Here are the events this week:
May 12 - Test the Best Road - Specialized Bicycles will be pulling up in front of our door with all the best bikes on the market ready for you to try! See you from 3 to 6 p.m. (Please bring your seat height and bike size with you).
May 12 - Ride with the Mayor. We will start this group ride around 6pm as Mayor Tomlinson leads us out kicking off our Tuesday Night Ride!
May 13 - Ride Of Silence - The annual Ride Of Silence will be taking place at 6pm from the Columbus Museum. The purpose of this ride is to raise awarness for cyclists on the road. This is a national event and shops across the USA will be conducting rides at the same time. This ride will be conducted in silence, police escorted, and is approximately 8 miles at a slow pace through MidTown/city streets. It is fairly family friendly for your older kids and a video to be shown at the end about rider safety.
We really can't stress the importance of this event enough, especially given the two recent bicycle related deaths. Please mark this evening on your calendar and help raise bicycle awarness in our community.
Here are more events taking place for the rest of Bike Month through the end of May:
May 23-24 - Ride and Run Across Georgia. Riders will be riding from Savannah to Columbus in teams of 4 or solo and will be finishing throughout the day on Sunday May 24. Hang out and listen to some music and enjoy some food as we congratulate these riders accomplishments!
May 28 - Our monthly Fat Tires and Flat Tires clinic will teach you how to quickly and effectively change your tire. See you at the shop at 5:30 p.m. We'll supply the Fat Tire beer and the wheels.
Every Saturday - No Nuts Just Guts! Ladies come on out and meet Suzanne Kraus in front of the shop at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings for our ladies ride. This is a relax and social weekly ride. Open to all levels.
