AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - The intersection at Toomer's Corner is now closed for a major construction project that will last throughout the summer.
The city kicked off the project Monday morning.
The new corner will be more conducive to downtown events celebrating both campus and community, and will be more attractive and functional for downtown visitors.
Throughout the construction process, downtown businesses and restaurants will remain open for business and parking will be free.
The Corner Construction will raise the intersection to match the elevation of the sidewalks for downtown events. New crosswalks and a permanent tiger paw design will also be created.

Additionally, parts of Samford Park at Auburn University will close this summer as Phase 2 of the redevelopment project begins. That plan calls for the planting of 30 live oak trees along a new brick walkway that will connect Samford Hall to Toomer's Corner.
Those 30 trees were grown from acorns taken from the iconic Auburn oaks 12 years ago.
The project is expected to be complete by July 1.
