FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - Fort Benning commemorated the 50 years since the start of the Vietnam War by recognizing more than 40 veterans of that conflict.
A Vietnam War Certificate of Honor program was held Tuesday morning at the Fort Benning Club. Georgia State Senator and Vietnam veteran Ed Harbison handed out certificates and lapel pins to those who served in the war.
The program was made possible through the Georgia Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense.
Retired Colonel "Biff" Hadden talked to us about the treatment of Vietnam Veterans.
"When we came back from Vietnam it was not uncommon to be called a lot of vile names," Hadden said. "The implication was we were guilty just by association. So folks just to realize we were just soldiers doing our jobs and now folks are thanking us for it is very important."
The Vietnam War began in 1954 and ended in 1975. Georgia is home more than 200,000 Vietnam War veterans.
