COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM/WXTX) - The distance across the state of Georgia is more than 250 miles, but can you imagine running that entire distance?
John Teeples and other runners are doing just that for the 7th year of "Run for the Heroes." They left early Wednesday from Fort Stewart in Savannah, running nearly 70 miles per day, and plan to arrive at Fort Benning Saturday.
The goal is to raise money for the nonprofit organization "House of Heroes" in Columbus that provides home repairs and improvements to military and public service veterans.
As we head into Memorial Day weekend, Teeples tells us soldiers make much bigger and more dangerous sacrifices than what he's doing.
"It pales in comparison to the craziness that the military goes through for us. I tell everybody, this is a huge challenge, but I'm out here with a lifeline, a safety net, I can quit anytime I want, take a break," said Teeples who was in Montezuma, still running Friday afternoon.
He says 250 runners and some bikers are participating, including relay teams.
In the last six years, they've raised close to $750,000 for House of Heroes through this Run Across Georgia.
