OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - On Thursday, May 21 around 11:30 pm, Lee County Sheriff's Investigators arrested Mechelle Belonn Virgin, 32, of Columbus, GA for discharging a firearm into an unoccupied dwelling.
Virgin was originally arrested by the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office as a fugitive from justice at the request of the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
This arrest occurred on May 20 while she was working as a correctional officer at the Rutledge State Prison.
She signed a waiver of extradition the next day and then transferred by Lee County authorities. Virgin was booked into the Lee County Detention Facility, but she has been released after posting a $5,000 bond. These charges stem from the following event.
On May 1, 2015 at approximately 9:00 p.m. the Lee County Sheriff's Office responded to the 2000 block of Lee Road 235 Smith Station, AL. This was in reference to a firearm being discharged into an apartment.
According to witnesses, they heard several loud bangs outside their home that sounded like gunfire. They further stated that they observed an unknown female running away from the apartments towards a vehicle that was parked at the end of their access driveway.
The suspect then jumped into the parked vehicle and fled the scene. Deputies observed what appeared to be bullet holes in the victim's home and recovered a 9mm shell casing at the scene.
Investigators located evidence at the scene linking Virgin to the crime. No one was injured in this incident. This case is still under investigation.
