FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - A World War II hero received a major honor Friday at Fort Benning in a ceremony that was seven decades overdue.
First Lieutenant Charles Shepherd, an Atlanta native, was awarded the Silver Star in November 1945 but was never presented it in a proper ceremony.
This was finally corrected in a ceremony held in conjunction with an Officer Candidate School Graduation.
Shepherd, a rifle platoon leader, was injured twice while fighting in Europe during World War II.
In 1943, Shepherd was in ROTC and close to graduating with his commission when he was drafted.
He was allowed to complete his college credit and earn his commission through OCS at Fort Benning.
