COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The first phase of demolition has begun on the Booker T. Washington apartments in Columbus as the city is working to revitalize that area.
According to the Columbus Housing Authority Chief Operating Officer Len Williams, this is the beginning of several phases; the first phase is to demolish the north end of BTW which is the end furthest from Commons.
Williams also says that construction on the apartments that are located at the 106 building should begin in Novembers, and leasing will be open around the end of 2016.
The southern end will be demolished will happen once all the residents are relocated around the beginning of 2016. The south end will become commercial property near the Commons and Veterans Parkway.
Due to the construction, several roads will be blocked including, 5th Avenue between U.S. 280 and 6th Street and 5th Street between Veterans Parkway and 5th Avenue.
