This was announced to the city department heads on Wednesday, June 10.
"Chief Prather has been with our Fire Department for many years and has served our community in an exemplary manner. I have no doubt that he will be an excellent chief, and I look forward to working with him as he leads the men and women of our fire department," Mayor Fuller said.
Many responses from the department heads throughout the city were very positive as the City Administrator, Joey Motley, commended the mayor on selecting Chief Prather as the new fire chief.
Chief Prather says he is excited about being offered this position and he looks forward to working with all of the city's departments and the Opelika City Council. He plans to carry on the tradition of excellence for Opelika.
Chief Prather started with the Opelika's Fire Department in Sept. of 1985 and he received his first promotion four years later. He was then promoted to Lieutenant in Dec. of 1994 and Fire Captain in 1997.
Chief Byron Prather was the Interim Fire Chief after Chief Terry Adkins retired and now Chief Prather is the permanent Fire Chief of Opelika.
