COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Thousands of elderly citizens are abused, neglected and exploited in Alabama each year, and the community is working to bring an end to the growing problem.
Governor Robert Bentley has proclaimed Monday, June 15 as Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Locally, the American Legion in Phenix City sponsored a breakfast to raise awareness about elder abuse in our community.
"Elders do matter and things do happen to where they cannot take care of themselves or people abuse them mentally, physically, and financially." said Captain Gail Green with the Phenix City Police Department.
One simple thing everyone can do to raise awareness is to wear purple. Purple is the color nationally recognized to represent elder abuse awareness.
