United Way in need of school supplies for Stuff the Bus campaign

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – While many families are enjoying the summer break, some folks are already preparing for next school year.

United Way and the Columbus Young Professionals are teaming up to help at-risk youth get the tools they need to learn and succeed in school by beginning this year's "Stuff the Bus" campaign.

They are asking the community to give back this summer by providing school supplies to less fortunate students in our area. The supplies will be presented to needy students in Columbus, Phenix City and Russell County on August 4.

Here is how you can help:

  • Sponsor a stuffed backpack for $30 or make a donation to Stuff the Bus
  • Donate new backpacks and supplies at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, or other participating companies
  • Volunteer to help sort the supplies and fill backpacks for distribution

Here is a suggested list of school supplies:

  • Backpacks (clear or mesh preferred)
  • 3 ring binder (2-inch)
  • Notebook paper (wide ruled)
  • Composition Notebooks
  • Tissues (oblong)
  • Index cards
  • Highlighters
  • Crayons
  • Erasers
  • Glue sticks
  • Scissors
  •  A dozen #2 pencils

You can drop off supplies at the following locations on Monday through Friday:

  • United Way, located 1100 5th Ave. 
  • Columbus Chamber of Commerce, located at 1200 6th Ave. 
  • Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, located at 945 Broadway 
  • Central Activities Center, located at 1500 14th St, Phenix City
  • Phenix City Library, located at 1501 17th Ave,, Phenix City
  • Urgent Care, located at 4328 Armour Rd., Columbus
