Firefighter cadets undergo car crash training

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Columbus Fire Department got to experience what it's like to respond to a horrific vehicle crash on Friday.

The training exercise simulated a real-life emergency situation and taught them how to cut a victim out of a car, how to handle a victim during rescue, and most importantly, how to adjust to a changing environment.

"We teach them that if that if their technique is safe to the rescuer and safe to the victim and it accomplishes their goal then that techniques probably the technique they'll want to use," said Lieutenant Chuck Herlth with the Columbus Fire Department.

The cadets have already gone through hazardous materials training and after passing this scenario, they'll learn how to pump and operate the fire trucks.
