FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - Author and Vietnam veteran Bud Alley stopped by the National Infantry Museum on Wednesday to sign copies of his autobiographical book.
His book "The Ghosts of the Green Grass" details his account of the North Vietnamese ambush on soldiers in the Ia Drang Valley in Vietnam.
It tells the story of 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry, as they were led into battle on November 17, 1965. What they did not know was that North Vietnamese soldiers were in hiding, waiting to ambush them.
By sunrise the next day, 155 members of the unit lay dead and many more were wounded.
Alley spent years collecting firsthand stories from the men he served with, as well as their wives and widows.
