Fort Benning's Airmobile Unit celebrates 50th anniversary

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - Fort Benning's 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment and 1st Cavalry Division Airmobile Unit are celebrating their 50th anniversary of their formation.

This was the first Airmobile Unit in the United States Army and a completely new concept in warfare. The group became known as the Bullwhip Squadron.
By the end of the war, the Airmobile concept was considered a total success. About 140 people are expected to travel from all over the country for this reunion.

"Those you serve with, you never forget them and those that you lose in battle you always will remember and the purpose of these reunions is to honor those that did not come home and to honor those that we served shoulder to shoulder with,” Jim Talley said with the National infantry Museum.

The ceremony will close with a 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps by a local bugler.
