COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – From the WTVM News Leader 9 web desk, here are the top three stories you need to know for Thursday, July 2:

  1. A shooting in Columbus sends one man to the hospital. Police are now trying to find out if this was a random act of violence. A 56-year-old man was shot in the chest and rushed to the hospital following the shooting on the 300 block of 24th Street just after midnight Thursday. The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Columbus police at (706)-653-3400.
  2. More than a year-and-a-half after an ambush attack nearly killed Dawson Mayor Christopher Wright, a suspect is now in jail. Nakia Jones, 31, was arrested Wednesday in Albany and is in the Dougherty County Jail charged with aggravated assault. The GBI is still investigating the case.
  3. Governor Robert Bentley and Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange are set to make a "major statewide announcement" in Montgomery on Thursday morning. The press conference is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. in the Old House Chamber at the State Capitol. The governor's office is staying tight-lipped about the reason for the news conference. However, there are similar "major news conferences" being called by attorney generals in Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi all at the same time. There is speculation that the announcement could be regarding the BP oil spill that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.  Mobile users: You can watch the press conference on the WTVM News Leader 9 app by clicking the "live stream" tab.
