COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A judge sentenced a Columbus man to life in prison with the possibility of parole on Tuesday, July 7 after he was convicted last week in a 2013 murder.
Shakeim Dorsey was convicted last week by a jury for the murder of 28-year-old Derickes Miles in April 2013.
Investigators say Dorsey shot Miles in the back as Miles left a home on 6th Avenue after he attempted to intervene in a fight Dorsey was having with his girlfriend.
Miles' family was in court Tuesday and spoke with News Leader 9 after the sentence was handed down.
"So I think there could have been more done, but I feel more happy and relief in knowing that he is not going to walk out right now," said sister Tamiche Miles.
"We still have to live with the holidays and I still have to deal with my family trying to be able to cope with it the best way they know how," said brother Isaac Miles.
Dorsey also received five years for possessing a firearm during the commission of a crime.
He apologized to both his and Miles's family.
