LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -

The Lee County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning to residents who have received a call from a group attempting to obtain credit card information.

These are automated calls and while they may sound legitimate, they are not.

The call claims it is the Charter Bank Fraud Detection Department and states that a hold has been placed on your account. They may request that you enter your credit card number using the key pad on your phone.

Some calls originate from area code "877" along with a "Charter" site to go to for more info. Everyone is advised to ignore the call and block the number.
Financial institutions do not contact account holders and request sensitive account information by telephone.

Citizens are reminded that the best method of exchange involving personal information should be conducted in person with someone you know and trust or via a confirmed and trusted internet site on a secure network.
