Fort Benning soldier honored for saving a life

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - A Fort Benning soldier received an honor for heroism on Friday.

Second Lieutenant Robert Fetters, an officer graduating from the Infantry Officer Basic Leader Course, received the Soldiers Medal .

In 2013, while Fetters was still a West Point cadet, he jumped onto tracks to rescue a woman who was hit by a train. The woman lost both legs, but Fetters' actions saved her life.

He spoke about why he believes other soldiers are more deserving of this award.

"I am a solider just like any other. There are plenty of people overseas that do this type of thing every day. They go through these things with their fellow soldiers where they are under fire all the time," Fetters said.

Lt. Fetters says he has not spoken with the woman he helped save since the accident, but hopes she is doing alright.

He says he would love to speak to her before heading overseas to London on a scholarship.
