Bicycles for needy children stolen for 2nd year in row

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A Columbus man who collects bicycles for needy children at Christmas has fallen victim to thieves for the second time in less than a year.

Fifteen brand new bikes were stolen from Chester Jackson's East Coast Body Shop on Farr Road in Columbus early Tuesday morning.

Jackson says the same thing happened last year when juveniles broke in and stole several bikes. He collects the bicycles throughout the year to be given away at his annual Wishing Well Bicycle Giveaway in December.

Jackson says if the culprits are caught, he doesn't want them to go to jail. He'd rather they spend time on his lot fixing bicycles as restitution.

Jackson is also hoping that someone will donate a semi-trailer that can be parked in front of his shop, for a more secure storage of the bicycles.

Last year Jackson gave away 800 bicycles to needy children in the Columbus area.  This year his goal is to give away 1,000.  If you would like to help, call Jackson at (706) 685-0823.  If you are not able to drop the bicycle off at his Farr Road location he says he will come and pick it up.
