FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - The U.S. Veterans Affairs department has had plenty of challenges lately, but a new one is a matter of life and death.
We've learned nearly one third of military veterans waiting for medical help from the VA will not be seen by the agency. That's because they are already dead, according to the Huffington Post.
A program specialist with the VA in Atlanta provided HuffPost with a report reviewing the accuracy of the VA's death records.
As of April, close to 850,000 veterans were on a list seeking VA health care. The problem is not the overall number, but that some 240,000 were listed as deceased, meaning they died after applying for help from Veterans Affairs.
A Veterans Affairs spokeswoman says some may have remained on the pending list even though they didn't complete the application form.
