Green Island pool closed through weekend after toddler drowns

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The pool at the Green Island Country Club in Columbus will remain closed until next week after the drowning of a 3-year-old boy.

Manuel Cabezas died after being pulled from the water Wednesday, July 22. Authorities say two lifeguards noticed the child, who was part of a summer camp, floating on his back in four feet of water.

Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Freeman Worley says the toddler was not wearing a life vest.

Lifeguards tried to resuscitate the child but he was pronounced dead a short time later at Midtown Medical Center. Worley says an autopsy should be performed this week.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon and sent to Newsleader 9, Jeffrey Blais, General Manger of the Green Island Country Club said "It is with great sadness that I must share with everyone the tragedy that occurred yesterday at our club. Yesterday afternoon, the life of a young child was lost at our pool. We are tirelessly investigating what happened and out of respect of all involved, most importantly the child's family, we cannot comment further at this time."

Blais added that the pool would remain closed through Sunday, July 26.

A fund has been set up on Facebook to help the family. It's called the Manuel "Will" Cabezas Memorial Fund. If you would like more information go to their Facebook page.
